Certification Process
The purpose of certification is to impart the knowledge necessary to enable a Certified Member to perform effectively under the Act, with the goal of safer workplaces and significant reductions in the incidence of occupational illnesses, injuries and deaths in Ontario.
Certification of designated Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) members is a requirement under Ontario’s Occupational Health & Safety Act for most workplaces with 20 or more workers.
Every Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) must have at least two certified members: one representing workers and one representing management. One worker and one management designated JHSC member must complete Part One and Part Two of the Training to receive certification status.

Understand the organization, contents and definitions in the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Describe the general duties and responsibilities of employers and supervisors.
Understand the duties & responsibilities of workers and certified members of a Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC).
Describe the steps to follow after a fatality or critical injury.
Understand the fundamentals of accident prevention.
