Certification Process



The purpose of certification is to impart the knowledge necessary to enable a Certified Member to perform effectively under the Act, with the goal of safer workplaces and significant reductions in the incidence of occupational illnesses, injuries and deaths in Ontario.

Certification of designated Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) members is a requirement under Ontario’s Occupational Health & Safety Act for most workplaces with 20 or more workers.

Every Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) must have at least two certified members: one representing workers and one representing management. One worker and one management designated JHSC member must complete Part One and Part Two of the Training to receive certification status.


Part One: Basic Certification Training:

 
This course provides an overall knowledge of health and safety that applies to all workplaces.

  • pointer Joint Health & Safety Committee Roles and Responsibilities
  • pointer Recognizing, Assessing and Controlling Hazards—(Physical, Biological,Ergonomic, Stress and Chemical)
  • pointer Accident and Incident Investigations
  • pointer Health & Safety Statistics
  • pointer Workplace Inspections

  • pointer Members of the Joint Health & Safety Committee


Learning Objectives of this course include;



  • pointer Understand the organization, contents and definitions in the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • pointer Describe the general duties and responsibilities of employers and supervisors.
  • pointer Understand the duties & responsibilities of workers and certified members of a Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC).
  • pointer Describe the steps to follow after a fatality or critical injury.
  • pointer Understand the fundamentals of accident prevention.

Certification Process

Part Two: Basic Certification Training:

 
Workplace - Specific Hazard Training focuses on significant hazards in your workplace. It covers how to assess those hazards and ways to control and/or eliminate them. One worker and one management designated JHSC member must complete both Part One and Part Two of the Training. Training for Part Two must be identical for both employer and worker JHSC members.
